Jesse Jackson criticized Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert on Sunday for treating LeBron James like a “runaway slave” and said that the owner’s incendiary letter to Cavs fans put LeBron in danger.

Gilbert’s letter, which was intended for Cavs fans but has generated attention nationally, called James cowardly and narcissistic and said that he would take his “curse” with him to Miami.

Jackson said Gilbert’s comments were “mean, arrogant and presumptuous.”

“He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Jackson said. “His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner employee relationship — between business partners — and LeBron honored his contract.”

Jackson also suggested that the NBA Players Association file a grievance about the letter in an attempt to prevent a similar incident in the future.
