The Supreme Court, in a session on Monday, ruled that states can’t require prospective voters to prove they’re U.S. citizens before using a federal registration system that makes signing up easier.

The vote was 7-2 in favor to throw out Arizona’s voter-approved requirement that potential voters prove they’re a US citizen before using a voter registration form.

For the opinion of the court’s majority, Justice Antonia Scalia wrote, “Federal law precludes Arizona from requiring a federal form applicant to submit information beyond that required by the form itself.”
