Hurricane Issac came ashore in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama late Tuesday evening and brought with it over two feet of water and a storm surge that was reportedly near 20 feet. In fact, there are reports that one of the levees was breeched near Plaquemines Parish in New Orleans, where rescue efforts are underway today after that community was found to be completely underwater. Residents who have tried to return to the area have discovered there is nothing to return to, but say they believe that mostly everyone had evacuated the area.

There are also reports that just like Hurricane Katrina, the storm has left people on rooftops and holding on to whatever they can as they await rescue. Hundreds of thousands of residents are now without power, with extensive damage all along the Gulf Coast as officials are trying to assess the destruction, but the storm is still hovering over Louisiana and the weather conditions are making rescue and power restoration efforts even harder.
