Richmond Police Department Partners with Richmond Public Schools to light the way for Special Olympics Virginia.

Local officers and students will take to the streets Friday in support of Special Olympics Virginia. The Richmond Police Department’s current academy class, led by Richmond Police Chief Tarasovic, and a group of local Richmond Public Schools students will carry the Flame of Hope to Special Olympics Virginia’s Urban Programs’ Track & Field competition at Maggie Walker Governor’s School.

The 1-mile run will begin at the Richmond Police Department Training Academy, 1202 W. Graham Road, at 9 am and end at Maggie Walker Governor’s School.

More than 20 middle and high school students, who also are raising money for Special Olympics Virginia as a part of this Run with the Law initiative, are expected to participate.

The Torch Run brings together officers from law enforcement agencies and corrections

departments across the state to raise funds and awareness for programs and each June, officers carry the Flame of Hope across the state culminating with the Torch Run Final Leg, and the lighting of the cauldron to officially open Summer Games in Richmond.

The 1,900-mile, 7-day Torch Run involves more than 2,000 law enforcement officers and personnel representing more than 200 law enforcement agencies across Virginia. This year’s Summer Games take place June 6-7 at various venues in Richmond.
