Amanda Knox was convicted of murder on Thursday and sentenced to 28 1/2 years in prison by an appeals court in Florence, Italy. Her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito was also convicted and sentenced to 25 years for his role in the crime.

In a statement released by Knox’s representatives, she stated that “the evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Rather, nothing has changed. There has always been a marked lack of evidence. My family and I have suffered greatly from this wrongful persecution.”

Knox’s case now goes to the Italian Supreme Court, which is expected to affirm the conviction and will probably result in extradition orders for Knox to return to Italy and serve the sentence. Legal analysts say the verdict will be upheld and more than likely, Knox would have to surrender and be extradited.

Most speak about double-jeopardy but that does not exist in the legal system of Italy.
