Singer Johnny Gill is being sued for defamation over remarks he made on Twitter about the CEO of his record label.

The former New Edition singer commented on the lawsuit and defended his comments, citing “freedom of speech.”

The lawsuit, filed Thursday, August 11, in L.A. County Superior Court, claims that Gill defamed producer/executive Ira DeWitt, wife of St. Louis Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt, when he accused her of leaking a song from his new album and called her “deranged” in a series of Twitter of messages posted last week.

TMZ reports, Gill has dismissed the charge that his tweets damaged DeWitt’s character and argued that people shouldn’t be liable for what they say on Twitter. Otherwise, “the courtrooms would be full with a bunch of Twitter people complaining about things people say every day,” he said. “It’s freedom of speech.”
