Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and wife Maureen have been on indicted federal charges approximately 9-days after leaving office. The  forty plus pages 14-count indictment alledges that McDonnell and wife Maureen accepted expensive gifts and loans in the corruption scandal. The former first couple of Virginia are charged with illegally accepting gifts, expensive vacations and big loans from the former CEO of a dietary supplement company, Star Scientific. Jonnie Williams SR made large contributions to the McDonnell campaign in 2009.

During a press conference at the Williams Mullens Building Tuesday night, ex-governor McDonnell and wife Maureen rejected the 14-count indictment. He said, the facts and the law are clearly on our side. “We will face these accusations with strength and love”.  McDonnell apologized for his “poor judement” in accepting gifts and loans from Williams, but insists he “did nothing illegal.” McDonnell said, the false accusations are an unfair “overreach of the federal government.”

Newly sworn-in Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said he is “obviously troubled” by Tuesday’s federal indictments against former Governo Bob McDonnell and wife, Maureen. In a statement, McAuliffe said, “This is a sad day for Virginia, but I remain optimistic that we can work together to reform our system in order to prevent episodes like this from occuring ever again.”
