The University of Virginia’s basketball team continued its fast start with yet another big win over George Mason 68-48 at JPJ Arena to improve their mark to 8-1.   VCU and Richmond were the State’s toast of the Sportsworld back in March when the “madness” was at fever pitch as both city schools went to the Sweet 16, VCU all the way to the Final Four.  So when the Spiders and Rams got together in Friday’s big Capital City showdown at the Siegal Center, there was more than casual interest.  A great game, VCU was leading big late in the second half.   Richmond is 6-2, while the Rams are 5-3.   A big crowd and a national ESPN-2 TV audience on hand for this annual Downtown/West End hook-up.   The Hokies of Virginia Tech grabbed a road victory on Wednesday night at Rhode Island, and will host Norfolk State in Blacksburg on Sunday.   Virginia Union was coming off a big win over arch-rival Virginia State last Sunday, but lost at West Virginia Wesleyan in a non-league game.  Meanwhile, the Trojans don’t play again until December 19th.
