The moment sparked a flood of online commentary after it showed the 7-year-old excitedly reaching for her mom’s microphone as Beyoncé proudly spoke about Knowles’ new book, Matriarch: A Memoir. In the clip, Tina Knowles gently pulls Rumi back, and older sister Blue Ivy quickly steps in, holds Rumi’s hand, and calmly whispers “shh.”

Social media lit up with different takes on what happened, but Knowles explained it all during a stop on her book tour while talking with Gayle King. “People have written all kinds of narratives about it,” Knowles said. “It was real. It’s real life, you know. Grandmas don’t play.”

She went on to clarify that the moment wasn’t as dramatic as it looked. “She was reaching for the mic because she wanted to say something, and I realized that,” Knowles said. “She was pulling, and I was like, ‘Oh God, the last thing we need is for that mic to hit her in the face.’”

Despite the small moment, Knowles said sharing the stage with her daughter and granddaughters was deeply meaningful. “I got to be on there with [Beyoncé] and Blue and Rumi, and that made it so special,” she said. “I’m usually behind the stage — but it was actually fun. It was exciting.”

Knowles even recalled asking Rumi what it felt like to be up there with thousands of fans cheering. “She said, ‘It feels powerful,’” Knowles said, laughing.
