A new documentary is shedding light on Wendy Williams’ struggles with alcoholism, memory issues, and life under guardianship. The special, titled TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?, aired on May 19 on the ID Channel and takes a close look at the former talk show host’s current condition and living situation.

According to investigative journalist Diane Dimond, who appears in the documentary, Wendy, 60, had a troubling incident at her assisted living facility on her birthday. Dimond claims Wendy, who was originally placed on the third floor of the facility where she had some freedom to move around, took the elevator up to the rooftop bar. Once there, she allegedly ordered multiple drinks and ended up relapsing.

Following the incident, Dimond says Wendy was transferred to a more restrictive memory care unit on the fifth floor. On that floor, residents are locked in 24/7 unless their guardian grants permission for outings. The memory care unit is designed for those experiencing cognitive decline or dementia, and includes a private room with a bathroom and TV.

Wendy has been under guardianship since 2022. In 2023, she was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), conditions that affect speech, behavior, and decision-making. However, some medical experts featured in the documentary believe her condition could be alcohol-related dementia, which can present similar symptoms.

Dr. Daniel Amen, a specialist in brain disorders, noted, “Alcohol is one of the main causes of cognitive decline and dementia. In fact, I believe that alcoholic dementia is the second most common cause.”

Wendy herself addressed her sobriety in a March interview on The View, saying she is now alcohol-free. “I’ve had my devices,” she said, “but I am easily going on with my life, alcohol-free.”

Despite these claims, her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, has been pushing for a new full medical evaluation. In a February court filing, Morrissey stressed that Williams needs a comprehensive neurological and psychological assessment by a qualified expert—not assumptions made online or in tabloids.

The court ordered this new round of testing to be completed in March, but according to Morrissey, Wendy has not followed through. “She declined to participate in the testing to date,” Morrissey told PEOPLE. Wendy responded to that claim by saying she wasn’t aware of it and denied opting out.

“I don’t know anything about that,” she told PEOPLE, laughing. “Bulls—. I am open to what I am open to, and I can’t talk about it right now.”
