Richmond and the world get ready for the Arthur Ashe Boulevard Celebration Week!

Richmond native Arthur Ashe was a professional tennis player who won three Grand Slam titles. He was the first black player selected for the United States Davis Cup team, and Ashe remains the only black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open. Beyond his career in tennis, Ashe was an advocate for social justice. Among other activities, he campaigned against apartheid in South Africa and advocated for AIDS awareness and research.

Who is the visionary behind the ‘it’s time’ re-naming of the Boulevard and the events this week? He is none other than Arthur Ashe’s nephew David Harris. To learn more about the Arthur Ashe Boulevard re-naming and the schedule of events, visit arthurasheblvd.com
