It goes without saying at this point that Kanye West is the most polarizing figure in all of entertainment. Whether you love him, hate him or fall somewhere in the middle, he manages to get tons of press and extreme reactions to whatever it is he does. Ye’s latest situation that caused an uproar was when he put out a casting call for his Yeezy Season 4 fashion show that requested “multiracial women only.” Naturally both white and black women were equally offended, however it was interesting that none of the critics referred back to Kanye’s previous fashion shows that featured more models of color (in all shades of brown) than many of the more mainstream designers did. That’s the thing with Kanye though, his intentions always seem to be in the right place, but his past actions overshadow that and make people side-eye everything he says or does.

Kanye loves to talk or rant if you prefer, and as a result he doesn’t always articulate his points in the best way. Such is the case with the model casting that asked for “multiracial women only.” Vogue is reporting that Ye has explained what he meant in the casting call and it wasn’t about racism, but instead an extremely poor choice of words.

West may be mostly trying to avoid controversy at the moment, but controversy has a way of trailing him. When he tweeted a casting notice for the Season 4 show that specified “multiracial women only,” the backlash on social media was instantaneous.

“The ten thousand people that showed up [to the casting] didn’t have a problem with it,” West said. But he insists the concept was not intended to exclude anyone, least of all black women. “How do you word the idea that you want all variations of black?” West said. “How do you word that exactly?”

Apparently he was telling the truth about the types of models that he wanted for his show because there were several black models represented in all shades, as in the past, so maybe the poor wording was indeed the issue.

Now on to the actual Yeezy Season 4 fashion show which took place this afternoon. If you have followed the previous Yeezy fashion shows you know by now that Kanye places the models in a standing formation where they are encouraged not to move until the show is over. Well, this proved to be a bit of a challenge today because for the first time the show was outside in hot temperatures and one model fainted from the heat. Also as with prior Yeezy shows, he was running late and some members of the audience began to get antsy. Being that Kanye is a perfectionist to the extreme, this isn’t surprising.

The timing of the show of course was planned to coincide with NYFW, but it also fell in line with his back-to-back sold out shows at Madison Square Garden on Monday and Tuesday night. The show itself featured his favored color palettes of nude, cream and black with other accent shades such as mustard and camouflage. There were his staple bodysuits (that wife Kim Kardashian loves to wear), hooded coats, thigh-high boots and sweater dresses to name a few of the pieces shown.

The audience was star-studded with some of the top fashion editors, most of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Lala Anthony, Teyana Taylor (who modeled), Anna Wintour, Pharrell Williams, Pusha T and more.
