Today, the President and Vice President will travel to Orlando, Florida to meet with families of victims of the attack and stand in solidarity with the Orlando community.

And it’s not just getting to be a habit, it is a habit.

I was in Aurora, Colorado when Mr. Obama traveled there to meet with families after the horrible theater massacre.

“When you have the opportunity to speak to families who have lost loved ones. As I described to them, I come to them not so much as president as I do as a father and as a husband,”

I was in Newtown for this:

“And you must know that whatever measure of comfort we can provide, we will provide; whatever portion of sadness that we can share with you to ease this heavy load, we will gladly bear it.  Newtown — you are not alone.”

And Charleston.

“Amazing grace how sweet the sound…”

I could go on, but we don’t have enough time in this segment.

The President has addressed mass shootings 15 times since taking office – 15 times  he’s had to comfort a sad and frightened nation.

But this one is terror related.

This one, unlike any he’s addressed is considered a gay hate crime.

It will be interesting to see how he deals with it – who he meets with – where he goes.

In 7 years we’ve watched the President become a champion for gay people, after evolving on same sex marriage.

Now we’ll sadly get to watch him become a comforter in chief for gays – the ones who survived – and their loved ones.

So here’s something to keep in mind as you contemplate how to cast your vote in this political season – offering comfort is something a president must do often and well.

It’s not a skill one can be taught.

Nor can it be  acquired from advisors.

It comes naturally.

Food for thought.
