We’ve been learning a lot about the 29-year-old man accused of killing 49 people and injuring more than 50 others in the pulse nightclub in Orlando a few nights ago.
The most interesting thing that we have learned is that Omar Mateen may have been a self-hating gay man who was conflicted by his religion and his sexuality.
Mateen’s ex-wife has been talking to CNN and other news outlets saying her ex-husband had a secret life
Sitora Yusufiy was married to Mateen for just a few months in 2009.
When asked by CNN if Mateen was gay she hesitated and said she couldn’t say.
But her fiancé, Marco Dias, told a foreign news outlet that “Yusufiy believed that Mateen had “gay tendencies” and that his father had called him gay in front of her. Dias also claimed “the FBI asked her not to tell this to the American media.””
And speaking to the Palm Beach Post, A former classmate of Omar Mateen’s 2006 police academy class said “he believed Mateen was gay, saying Mateen once asked him out.”
The newspaper writes, “the classmate said that he, Mateen and other classmates would hang out, sometimes going to gay nightclubs, after classes at the Indian River Community College police academy. He said Mateen asked him out romantically.”
The man says, “we went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer.”
The Los Angeles Times reports that at least 4 regular customers of Pulse nightclub say Mateen was a frequent customer who bragged about having a wife and son and sometimes got so drunk and belligerent that he had to be removed from the club.
Several men also told The Times that they had communicated with Mateen on gay hookup apps.
It wouldn’t surprise many psychologists and members of the gay community if Mateen turns out to be gay.
Many of the most vehement homophobes are known to be harboring attraction to the same sex while using their opposition to it as a shield.
Like the saying goes, “thou doth protest too much.” And this was the most ultimate and extreme protest.
