Cam Newton graced the cover of Ebony Magazine’s April/May issue and opened up about everything from losing the Super Bowl, to being a new dad.

Newton was the first player to throw 400 yards in his NFL debut, and he went on to mark a season of record-setting with the Carolina Panthers. But it all almost came to an end in December 2014, when the quarterback was in a horrific car accident“Somebody is supposed to be dead,” the NFL star said of the accident.

When asked about having to overcome racial hurdles in his professional career, Newton revealed that it made him a better player and person, telling the mag, “It made me think, ‘Let me get my shit together, dawg.’ That same story gives me the discipline [to make better decisions] when I’m out now.”

The ATL native also showed love to his family, admitting they’re the real MVPs, “When I see family,” Newton says, “I see the supporting cast that has helped propel me.”

The May issue of Ebony has two covers featuring the QB: one solo cover and one with his mother Jackie Newton. It hits newsstands soon.
