What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which blood sugar levels are too high. Insulin is a hormone made by our bodies that helps control blood sugar. In Type 1 diabetes, the body does not make insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, the body doesn’t make insulin well or use insulin well. In both conditions, the lack of effective insulin causes blood sugars to be high.

How common is diabetes?
According to the CDC, more than 29 million Americans have diabetes; 1 in 4 doesn’t know.
According to the US Dept of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African-American adults are 80 percent more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a physician.
