OutKast‘s appeal has been wrapped in nostalgia for a while, but it wasn’t that long ago when the duo was the biggest hip-hop group in the country. “Hey Ya” was the last time Polaroids were really relevant, and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is the last hip-hop album (well, half hip-hop) to win the coveted Album of the Year Grammy. That’s definitely enough to headline the Super Bowl.

That’s no hyperbole. Big Boi revealed on ESPN’s The Dan LeBatard Show that OutKast was offered the Super Bowl gig in 2004. It’s a gig of a lifetime that the group turned down because Andre 3000 refused to do “Hey Ya” and “The Way You Move” unless they could perform them in full. The Super Bowl organizers wouldn’t give them the time to do so.

As a result, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson went instead. Jackson had the wardrobe malfunction that scarred her career. Think about how different today’s conversations would’ve been if Andre 3000 or the Super Bowl had been more flexible.
