Family, friends, and supporters of Corey Jones gathered to pay their respects to the musician on Monday evening after he was fatally shot by a plainclothes police officer early Sunday morning.

The Bible Church of God in Boynton Beach, Florida was filled with people who admired Jones. The drummer was leaving a performance with his band Saturday evening when his car broke down on the side of the I-95 highway. Palm Beach Gardens officer Nouman Raja approached him and after an alleged confrontation, Jones was fatally shot.

Police initially claimed Jones had a gun, but the findings haven’t been confirmed, according to WPTV.

WPTV reports:

“Just really sad for Corey’s family. They lost an amazing person, a really special human being and my heart goes out to them more than anything,” said Boris Simeonov, who is the lead singer of the band Jones played the drums for.

“I can’t explain it. It just hurt man. It’s like a part of me is gone,” said Sylvester ‘Tre’ Banks III, Jones’ cousin. “Growing up watching him play the drums. I watched him. He taught me everything I know,” said Banks in tears.

Raja was reportedly working in the area on a burglary surveillance case before he approached Jones. Police have not publicly addressed the encounter, but for now, Raja has been placed on paid administrative leave.
