Thomas Carter has become a successful film and television director after beginning his career in front of the camera. Carter’s most notable screen role was the part of James “Hollywood” Hayward on CBS’ The White Shadow, and it was there when Carter also learned the craft of directing.

Carter was born July 17, 1953 in Austin, Texas. After high school, Carter entered Texas State University and graduated in 1974 with a degree in Film. After several bit roles in shows such as M*A*S*H, Good Times, and What’s Happening, Carter was cast as Hayward, a highly intelligent basketball player, on The White Shadow from 1978 to 1981. In his second year on the show, Carter directed his first of four episodes for the series.

From there, Carter directed several hit TV dramas such as Fame, St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice among others. Feature films would come later, with his most recognizable projects include Eddie Murphy’s Metro, Samuel L. Jackson‘s Coach Carter, and interracial teen romance flick, Save The Last Dance. Carter’s last major feature film project was 2014’s sports drama, When The Game Stands Tall.

Carter’s next big project, according to the Internet Movie Database, will be directing an episode for the upcoming Roots miniseries reboot in 2016.
