The Marshall “Major” Taylor Mural is on display at 401 East Marshall Street at the corners of 1st and Marshall Streets.  His bicycling legacy was brought out of the shadows by Tennis great and Richmond native Arthur Ashe. Marshall “Major” Taylor was the fastest bicycle racer in the world. Taylor was the first American to win the World Bicycle Championship. By the way, Taylor was black. He was not allowed to compete in the sport of bicycle racing with whites down south. He was faster than a motorcycle.

“I AM MAJOR TAYLOR” Mural Dedication Ceremony at 1st and Marshall Street in Historic Jackson Ward. Join Miss Community Clovia Lawrence, and Micah Bam-Bamm White as they host the momentous celebration of the “Fastest Bicycle Racer in the World”. The event is happening today Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m, and it is one you don’t want to miss!!!!!!! Free to the public.

Congratulations to muralist Sir James Thornhill and his students on this wonderful painting and remembrance of Major Taylor.

Remember, the life and legacy of Marshall “Major” Taylor at the start of the UCI Road World Championships is this weekend in RVA. The event starts Saturday and has 12 races over nine days. Course range from 14 miles to 160 miles. All races will end downtown at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. A full list of street closures can be found here.
