During a recent meeting in Washington, Dr. William Harvey, longtime president of Hampton University and Chairman of President Obama’s Board of Advisors on HBCUs expressed his discontent with the lack of attention that has been put on historically black colleges and universities within our country. Funding for HBCUs have been on the decline and Dr. Harvey believes it’s because of the lack of support from federal agencies and that members of President Obama’s Advisory Board on HBCUs should have the opportunity to put their resources to use. “I have to say that one of my biggest concerns or regrets is that we are not being used as the advisory board we are supposed to be,” said Dr. Harvey during his address. “All this expertise – more than 150 years at the helm of HBCUs, decades as the heads of major philanthropic organizations, expertise in business, in fundraising and in public relations, connections on Wall Street, in the Ivy League and everywhere else. Yet we are not consulted when it comes to policy changes and decisions impacting – in a major way – the institutions on whose behalf we are to advocate…I am disappointed and saddened. ” Read more.

Ex CIA Case Officer Accused of Leaking Information to The New York Times

Jeffery Sterling, a former CIA case officer, is being accused of leaking confidential information to a New York Times reporter. Sterling allegedly shared information concerning a secret operation to interrupt Iran’s nuclear program with NYT journalist James Risen. Many people believe that Sterling has come under fire because he filed a discrimination lawsuit in the past against the CIA and was fired two months after. After he was let go he then reportedly contacted Risen so that he could have a platform to share his story. Despite the allegations, many people have stepped up to show support for Sterling. There has been a Kickstarter launched to help him and his family with their financial burdens. “The conviction was based entirely on circumstantial evidence. Mr. Risen was not required to testify and the prosecution could produce no documents, no recordings, nothing that directly linked Jeffrey as a source for Mr. Risen’s book. In fact, the FBI agent who investigated Jeffrey for over 10 years testified that there was absolutely no evidence that Jeffrey was a source,” reads the campaign page. “There are many people who believe that Jeffrey was steamrolled because of his color and because he stood up for what he believes in and would not plead guilty to something he did not do.” Read more.

PBS Will Release Film About the Black Panthers

PBS recently announced that Stanley Nelson’s new documentary, “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution,” will be distributed through their company. The film focuses on the rise and demise of the Black Panther Party and gives viewers and inside look into the revolutionary organization. It also captures how the Black Panther Party had a huge influence on African American culture and politics and how their movement still remains relevant as we deal with issues concerning police brutality today. “I am gratified that PBS has the courage and foresight to bring this film to audiences across the country, and we are thrilled to call them our partners,” said Nelson. “The Black Panthers made an indelible imprint on American culture and politics. The story of their rise and fall is essential history for understanding the times we live in, and the complicated political dynamics that are still at play.” The film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival last month. It will be shown at select movie theaters in the fall of 2015 and it will also be featured as part of PBS’ independent film series “Independent Lens” next year. Read more.
