Richmond, VA – Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen have been found guilty on federal corruption charges in Richmond. After two weeks of deliberations, jurors returned a verdict in 18 hours. McDonnell was found guilty on 11 counts of corruption and conspiracy charges and Maureen was found guilty on 8 counts of corruption plus an obstruction of justice charge. They were both found not guilty of falsifying loan documents. The McDonnell’s were indicted on 14 counts of corruption charges in January of this year. The McDonnells were convicted by 7 men and 5 women at the federal courthouse Thursday.
The former First Family are convicted of illegally accepting 177,000 dollars in loans and gifts in exchange for favoring the business of a major campaign donor. Attorneys for the McDonnells say they did not promise or provide any governmental advantage to Star Scientific former CEO, Jonnie Williams SR.
The McDonnell’s and supporters cried as the verdict was handed down by Judge James Spencer in federal court according to NBC12.
Bob McDonnell is the first governor to become a convicted felon.
Bob McDonnell and Maureen are facing up to 20 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines when sentenced on January 6, 2015. The McDonnells fate is now in the hands of a probation officer. NBC 12 is reporting that McDonnell told reporters after leaving the courthouse that “all I can say is my trust remains with The Lord.”
