I was immediately intrigued by BJ The Chicago Kid. By the time I had arrived to Studio 850, he was practicing his rifts perched in his chair. I recognized the shiny gold pyramid ring that shone when he’d maneuver the mic. He was a perfectionist, transitioning in and out of falsettos as he grooved to his guitarist Charlie Burrell’s instrument. All that and we hadn’t even started recording yet!

“Good Luv’n” began and instantly I was transported to a place that felt like an intimate soiree on a summer’s night. That’s the kind of vibe BJ gives when he sings. His music is soulful and makes you feel good. BJ’s musical influence comes from “Willie Hutch, Isley Brothers, Ice Cube, Do or Die, a little Kanye, a lot of John Coltrane, Kendrick, Schoolboy, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock, of course,” he told Spin.com.

BJ recently signed to the legendary Motown Records (we couldn’t imagine the young eclectic star anywhere else). BJ garnered a strong following with the release of his critically acclaimed mixtape “Pineapple Now & Laters.” Now, after surfing the independent waves in the industry, he’s taking a shot at mainstream while keeping the soul of an underground artist!
