For the College Football teams around the 804, the first full weekend of September was not a pleasant one, unless you’re Latrell Scott, Head Coach of the Virginia State University Trojans, who secured a season-opening 29-28 come-from-behind CIAA victory over the Broncos of Fayetteville State.  Scott, the former UR coach, is already off to a flying start with the Trojans, whose fans have not had a lot to cheer about the past few seasons.  With a road win to build confidence, State now travels to New York to play in the Urban League Classic this Saturday against Benedict College at Met Life Stadium in the Meadowlands.  The site of Super Bowl 2014 is no stranger to VSU, which has taken part in this showcase a number of times against various opponents.

In Daytona Beach, Florida, surely the weather was nice, but not a pleasure trip for Virginia Union as they found the Lions of Bethune – Cookman College to be a little too tough to tangle with in a 66 – 7 loss to the MEAC host.  It was the season opener for the Panthers, who hope to find Hovey Field a lot friendlier this weekend when the Bears of Shaw University visit Richmond.  Norfolk State University can never be accused of playing a soft schedule.  The Spartans took on the University of Maine at home last week, and played at Rutgers this past Saturday, suffering huge losses in both games.  Same scenario for MEAC partner Hampton University after Saturday’s loss to William & Mary, as both teams are now 0 -2.  The Pirates also lost their opener at Western Illinois.

In Charlottesville, Virginia had a golden opportunity after an exciting season-opening win over BYU, which was even more impressive after the Cougars whacked Texas this past weekend.  But these “quacks” from Oregon (no pun intended) were virtually impossible to slow down en route to a 59 – 10 blowout at Scott Stadium.  The 2nd-ranked Ducks proved to be on another level of play as the Oregon offense was relentless in attacking the Cavaliers.  UVA will have a week off to heal its ego before hosting VMI on September 21st.  The Hokies of Virginia Tech bounced back from their season-opening loss to top-ranked Alabama by trouncing Western Carolina 45 – 3.
