Governor Bob McDonnell announced Wednesday the dates for Virginia’s tax free holiday, August 2-4, 2013. The 5 percent sales tax will not be imposed on school supplies that are 20 dollars or less and clothing and footwear 100 dollars or less.

Parents, students and educators the sales tax is exempt on school supplies as binder pockets, book bags, calculators, highlighters and more. Also, the sales tax is imposed on clothes as gym suits, uniforms, hats and cats, shoes, sneakers and more.

What is a sales tax holiday?

A sales tax holiday is a temporary period when sales taxes are not collectible or payable on all or a specific class of purchases.

When will Virginia’s sales tax holiday for clothing and school supplies take place?

The sales tax holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2013 and end at midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2013. In future years, the sales tax holiday will take place at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and end at midnight on the Sunday immediately following.
