The Richmond School Board voted 5-4 to take under capacity schools offline. The chosen schools to close by the end of the school year are Clark Springs Elementary, Norrell Preschool and Adult Career Development Center.

The closure of  three schools in the city of Richmond is expected to generate over 1 million dollars.

The 5-4 vote led to five hours of pleas and disputes by parents and some members of the school board.

Richmond School Board Member Kim Gray told CBS-6 “the school system was built for 50,000 students but we have 23,000 to 24,000. We need to take buildings offline. They are costly to maintain and to staff.”

Richmond School Board Member Shonda Harris-Muhammed during the meeting said, “we have just told these children that we don’t care about them because of a million dollars.”

The schools will close by the end of the school year and students will be reassigned over the summer.
