The 2013 NCAA Tournament, more affectionately known as March Madness is an event that VCU fans now  live for because their team is no stranger to these proceedings.  The VCU Rams were seeded 5th in the South Region and after a stellar performance in the opening round against Akron in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the hometown favorites, the Michigan Wolverines were standing by next to test the Rams’ “Havoc” style of defense.

A  tall order indeed trying to beat Michigan in Detroit, and it proved to be tougher than the Black & Gold supporters thought as Michigan rolled to a 78 – 50 romp of the Rams, who had just hung a 50-spot on the board against Akron in the first half.  VCU’s season ends at 27 – 9, a fabulous season for a young team and certainly fans can expect this team to return to dance again next season, perhaps a little wiser and stronger

UVA is playing in the NIT and is a top seed in the tournament, which has so far yielded the Cavaliers two straight home games in Charlottesville, defeating Norfolk State and St. John’s on Sunday, to advance to the third round.  Virginia will play again at home in JPJ Arena on Wednesday night against the Hawkeyes of Iowa.   The Spiders of UR are enjoying their extended play in the CBI (College Basketball Invitational) Tournament.   UR now has a second round match-up against Wright State coming up on Monday night in Dayton, Ohio.

In the Women’s NCAA Tournament, the Lady Pirates of Hampton University won the MEAC Championship again, their fourth consecutive title, and took on 2nd-seeded Duke University on Sunday afternoon, with the Lady Blue Devils concluding Hampton’s season with a 68 – 51 loss.  HU was the state’s last NCAA Tournament hope.
