Round 2 of the 2013 CIAA Tournament in Charlotte today pitted arch-rivals Virginia State and Virginia Union against each other in the Women’s bracket, with the Lady Panthers advancing to the semifinals following a 57 – 55 victory over VSU. The VUU ladies will now meet Fayetteville State in Friday’s seni-final round, while Elizabeth City & Shaw University  join the Final Four this weekend as well.

In the Men’s bracket, the Trojans of Virginia State got a first-round win over Fayetteville, VSU’s first tournament victory in 4 years, and the Men of Troy were hoping to keep the momentum going in a quarter-final match-up with St. Augustine’s College last night.  VSU trailed big for most of the game but clawed their way back to tie the game with 30 seconds left before falling in the end 60 – 56.  The Men of Virginia Union had a first-round bye and will get into the mix on Thursday when the Panthers take on the Rams of Winston-Salem State University.

In the Capital City tonight, the University of Richmond, stuck in the middle of the Atlantic-10 pack as the regular season dwindles. The Spiders will entertain George Washington University tonight at the Robins Center, while the VCU Rams focus in on Saturday night’s BIG game at the Siegal Center against 20th-ranked Butler.

In the MEAC, the Spartans of Norfolk State University are on a hot buttered roll heading into the final weeks of the regular season, having won twelve straight and they remain undefeated in league play with three games left to play. Next up for the Spartans, a home date on Saturday against Bethune-Cookman,
