The 101st CIAA Tournament got underway today in the Queen City of Charlotte, NC, and the women of Virginia State University opened the 5-day festivities with a 57 – 50 win over Livingstone College, advancing to an 11am game on Wednesday against their 804 sister school & arch-rival Virginia Union. The Lady Panthers had a first-round bye and come into the tournament as the North Division’s No. 2 seed.

The men of Virginia State also had to work the opening round on Tuesday night, taking on Fayetteville State, and winning 75 – 65 to set up a second-round match against St. Augustine’s College tonight at 7pm.   The Trojans were up and down as the regular season drew to a close and ended the campaign with a thump in a road loss at Lincoln. The Panthers of Virginia Union have the luxury of a first-round bye and won’t play until Thursday when VUU battles the Rams of Winston-Salem State at 3pm.
