When you come from such an iconic lineage of talent and possess a rich musical history just because you’re a member of the legendary Jackson family legacy, it might seem a daunting task to strike out to create your own identity. Austin Brown, the nephew of pop/R&B music icons Michael & Janet Jackson and the youngest son of their sister Rebbie, has just successfully stepped outside of the shadow and into his own on his brand new mixtape “Highway ’85.”

Just when you thought the legacy couldn’t advance any further, here comes Austin Brown with a refreshing tenor, a jovial sound that simply feels good and makes you want to dance.

“Highway ’85” is the first full-length release from the budding singer/songwriter and it finds him carving his own niche with a hybrid of funk, jazz-influenced and high-powered sonic interpolations from the multi-instrumentalist. You cannot deny the guy has talent, but what really stands out is the quality of the production on the 11 tracks featuring Austin Brown’s powerful pen and a guest appearance from David Banner.

Some say he’s created his own effective mix of musings as a record producer borrowing tips from The Funk Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and even Quincy Jones, but if you’re still not sold, simply check it out for yourself. After the first listen, you’ll definitely find out Austin Brown is on his way. Just tune in and dance to the music.
