The City of Richmond advises metro-area residents to prepare for the potential impact from Hurricane Sandy, in a release sent out late Thursday afternoon.

Just this morning, however, Governor McDonnell has officially declared a state of emergency for Richmond, VA area residents ahead of the expected impact of Hurricane Sandy.

Be prepared by discussing family disaster communication as the anticipated forecast of the storm is still uncertain, but can potentially become treacherous causing power outages, high winds, flash floods from heavy rain and more dangerous weather in the coming days.

Residents are also advised to begin bringing in or securing any object that may be blown away by high winds, including plants, patio furniture, garden décor, etc.

If you need to leave, drive carefully and cautiously. Pack up your emergency care kits and be sure to have a clear route of escape in mind starting now.
