The Detroit Tigers left no doubt in anyone’s mind who the superior team was in sweeping the New York Yankees 4 games to none in the American League Championship Series. Game 4 ended in an 8 – 1 rout, which means Goochland native and former Old Dominion star Justin Verlander will pitch in his first World Series, a destination that seemed somewhat inevitable for a pitcher of Justin’s caliber.

This is Detroit’s first AL pennant and World Series appearance in six years, while it’s the first time a Yankees team has been swept out of the playoffs since 1980. That will occur often when you’re batting on;y .188 for the entire Championship Series. For Verlander’s family and local fans, this is a proud moment in the life of one of our Richmond area athletes, and we wish him the best in trying to secure his dream of a world title in baseball. It’s why they play the game!
