Comedian D.L. Hughley wasted no time slamming North Carolina for voting to ban same-sex marriage during his set at the Comedy Zone on Tuesday night. Hughley performs at the Comedy Zone tonight at 7 p.m. In his jab, Hughley said because of the passage of Amendment One, “You better change your name to the no Queen City.”

The quick jab segued into a bit about the economy and high unemployment rate. (Remember, when you used to talk s— at your job because you knew you could get another one?) Hughley’s show flowed that way. Hughley is known as one of the “Original Kings of Comedy.” He alternated between the typical relationships/sex jokes, a short bit about legalizing marijuana and a lot of quick hits about current events. Nothing was safe from Hughley’s keen tongue from Bishop Eddie Long to Syracuse’s Bernie Fine to Hughley’s autistic son.

Some of his bits, especially the riffs on child molestation, were in bad taste, but comedy is supposed to make you uncomfortable. Hughley’s best jokes were about current events. Hughley is a news junkie and briefly hosted a “Daily Show” style program called “D.L. Hughley Breaks the News” on CNN. On Tuesday, Hughley showed that he still has strong opinions about current events. He ripped black Republicans, especially Herman Cain, as tools of the Republican party. President Obama wasn’t safe from Hughley’s jokes.

“I like President Obama. I wish he was a little tougher,” he said. “He’s messing up black people’s reputation. White people used to be scared of us. Not anymore.”

It was good to see Hughley back in the club again. At times, he can be one of the funniest in the business.

After the show, he signed autographs and posed for pictures. Other highlights from Tuesday night’s show was a surprise appearance by Comedian Rodney Perry. Perry and ESPN’s Jay Harris, who also attended the show,  were in town for The William Wilson Foundation golf benefit.
