Today is a crazy day in the Republican primary race. Rick Perry dropped out of the race and endorsed Newt Gingrich. The Des Moines Register reports that Rick Santorum, not Mitt Romney, won the Iowa caucus.

“There is no viable path forward for me in this 2012 campaign,” said Perry announcing the suspension of his campaign. “I know when it’s time to make a strategic retreat.”

As expected, Perry endorsed Gingrich describing him as a conservative visionary who can transform the country. Gingrich can capture the fervor of the conservative movement and will tell Washington to take a hike, Perry said. Perry also acknowledged that he and Gingrich have had their differences along the way.

“Newt is not perfrect, but who among us is?,” Perry said.

All eyes are on South Carolina tonight when the top four debate: Romney, Santorum, Gingrich and Ron Paul. Pundits say Romney must debate well tonight. Polls indicate Romney’s lead over Gingrich is shrinking.

Watch tonight’s debate is at 8 p.m. on CNN. Then tell us which candidate poses a stronger threat to President Obama: Romney or Gingrich.
