Goochland native and former ODU standout Justin Verlander was named to pitch in the Major League All-Star Game Tuesday night in Kansas City, but no one expected hom to struggle with his pitches, certainly no one expected an 8 – 0 rout by the National League.   It was Verlander’s 5th All-Star game appearance and his fourth straight, but the NL bats were hot and heavy as they tagged Justin for 5 runs in the first inning before he stepped off the mound.

It was the batters from the San Francisco Giants who did most of the damage in the All – Star Classic with Melky Cabrera winning the game’s Most Valuable Player award in the very stadium he played in last year for the Kansas City Royals. Former Richmond Brave and long-time Atlanta star Chipper Jones played in his final All – Star game, garnering a single to help his NL teammates win home-field advantage in this year’s World Series.
