UPDATE: Charles Manson’s attorney DeJon R. Lewis said “Charles Manson does not need incarceration at this point in his life. He needs hospitalization,” Lewis told CNN. A decision on Manson’s parole hearing is expected by late afternoon.
Charles Milles Mansion was born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinatti, Ohio. Manson spent much of his life in penal institutions. He was dubbed “a career criminal.”
Manson was the leader of the notorious Manson Family, a group that arose in the California in the late 1960’s. Manson believed in “Helter Skelter” a song recorded by the Beatles. He believed that “Helter Skelter” was an impending apocalyptic race war, which he described in his own version of the lyrics to the Beatles’ song. He believed his murders would help to jumpstart that war.
Charles Manson was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder in the deaths of pregnant actress Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski and others. He was convicted of the murders through the joint-responsibility rule, which makes each member of a conspiracy guilty of crimes his fellow conspirators commit in furtherance of the conspiracy’s object.
Manson was sentenced to death but the decision was converted to life in prison in 1972. The California Supreme Court eliminated the death penalty stating it was unconstitutional. Therefore, Manson death penalty was changed in 1977 to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Charles Mansion is up for parole today. Manson has been in prison for just over 40 years. His regularly scheduled parole hearing today will be his 12th. The last time Manson attended a parole hearing was in 1997.
Manson is housed at the Corcocan State Prison in California. He resides in a special unit away from the general prison population.
