The National Education Association started a signature program 15 years ago to build a nation of readers. “Read Across America Day” is a year-round program that focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.

The NEA’s “Read Across America Day” takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Richmond, Virginia is participating, along with thousands of schools, libraries and community resource centers across the country by bringing together kids, teens, and books.

Theodor Seuss Giesel was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was an American writer, poet and cartoonist. He was widely known as Dr. Seuss and a bestselling author of children’s books including “Cat in the Hat”, “One Fish Two Fish Red fish Blue Fish”, “Green Eggs and Ham”, and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Dr. Seuss had several pen names for his children’s books, like, Theo Le Sieg and, in one case, Rosetta Stone.

The National Education Association adopted Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2, as the national “Read Across America Day’.

The Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax is in movie theatres now. The movie is a Dr. Seuss’ classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. The creature shares this hope with a boy who is trying to win the affection of the girl of his dreams.
