In the event of a natural disaster are you prepared? Last year Virginia experienced an earthquake, aftershocks and hurricanes. Several localities are still trying to recover from the devastation. Pre-register for Disaster Survivor Day and receive a free Survivor Kit.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, Central Virginia residents are invited to attend Survivor Day. It is a free event where individuals and families can learn how to live safely through natural disasters and other emergencies, like hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards and more.

Learn how to survive in your home without electricity for 72 hours and what take with you in the event of an emergency evacuation. Classes will be held in five localities and seven locations. All pre-registered attendees will receive free survivor kit supplies and a backpack. Classes are on a first come basis.

The Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) program focuses on enhancing regional preparedness in major metropolitan areas. Funded by the Department of Homeland Security, the UASI program direcetly supports the National Priority on expanding regional collaboration in the National Preparedness Guidelines and is intended to assist participating jurisdictions in developing integrated regional systems for prevention, protection, response and recovery.

The Central Virginia UASI is comprised of: The counties of Amelia, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King William, Louisa, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George, and Sussex.

The cities of: Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond

The military installation of: Defense Supply Center of Richmond, Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Lee, and Fort Pickett are aslo located within the CVUASI region.
