Mayor Jones Issues Statement on Justice Center Vote

Richmond, VA – Mayor Dwight C. Jones issued the following statement regarding the City Council vote approving the amendments to the 2009 Community Based Corrections Plan and Planning Study.  Tonight’s vote also requests reimbursement funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia for all eligible costs relating to the construction of the new Justice Center in the city of Richmond.

“I want to thank those members of City Council who supported tonight’s resolution.  This was a critical vote, and I’m pleased we received the support of the majority of City Council which now allows us to move forward with this much needed project.  We are confident that this is the right outcome and we anticipate a favorable response from the State Board of Corrections.  This is the right decision for our city, the law enforcement officers, and the inmates who are housed at Richmond City Jail, their families and all who bring services into the jail.  It is now time to move forward.

“As I’ve said before, we will remain engaged with this project as it moves forward.  We will hold the selected contractor accountable and we will continue to be very intentional about the outcomes that we expect to see as a result of this project.  I want to especially commend the citizens of the 6th district and particularly the Eastview community for their hard work in this process.  We will continue to work with the Eastview community throughout the remainder of this process as well.”
