The Native American sculpture “Connecticut” won’t be part of the nest for the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
The Richmond Metropolitan Authority, which owns and operates The Diamond, is getting ready to seek proposals to relocate “Connecticut” from the baseball stadium before the Class AA Flying Squirrels begin play this spring.
The artwork, finished in 1983 by local artist Paul DiPasquale, has been displayed at The Diamond since 1985 as a symbol for the Class AAA Richmond Braves, which relocated last year to Gwinnett County, Ga.
RMA officials said they’ve decided to seek a new home for the sculpture because it doesn’t represent the new team. The RMA will invite proposals later this week with hopes of finding a new home for “Connecticut” in the Richmond area. Proposals will be due Jan. 29. Submissions will be judged the proposer’s ability to maintain the artwork, to pay relocation costs, as well as the location and public access to the sculpture.
