Singer John Legend, via his Get Lifted Films Co., is officially a television producer.
NBC has picked up a new family comedy inspired by his executive producing partner, Mike Jackson’s childhood.
“Mixed Blessings,” the new sitcom will tell the story of a popular Hip-Hop artist living the dream and enjoying life, until he finds out he’s the father of a teenage son.
Father and son will have a hard time connecting due to a culture clash between the life of a Hip-Hop artist and a son who was raised in the suburbs by a white family.
Sorta has a familiar ring to it, doesn’t it?
According to Deadline magazine, the show is loosely based on Mike Jackson’s childhood.
Inspired by Jackson’s childhood growing up in suburban Philadelphia, Mixed Blessings centers on a prominent, black, street-bred hip-hop artist enjoying his single life who discovers that he has a teenage son and decides to connect with him and his white suburban family. The show explores the culture clash and the complicated journey of a father and son beginning their relationship as the dad soon discovers that fame, talent, and wealth get you nowhere when it comes to parenting. `
Reportedly several networks were interested in the show until they went into exclusive negotiations with NBC.
