The federal agency is strapped for cash and is trying to save money. Nationwide, thousands of post offices are being considered for closure including dozens in the commonwealth.
According to the Posmaster General, Patrick Donahoe, most of the offices considered for closures are in rural areas. Locally, six Richmond post offices could close for good, including branches on Hopkins Road and West Broad Street.
Postal officials say some post offices on the list don’t sell enough stamps or get a lot of foot traffic. However, post offices considered for a closure review doesn’t mean that a particular location will close. A final decision on which post office locations will close for good could be announced in November.
