Comedian Dave Chappelle apologized to the Seminole Indians for the lack of humor during what he called a “wild night” performing his stand-up act last Friday during a charity event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Miami.

“It’s not like a mean person, I might not act on it, but I felt myself being mean,” Chappelle said during an appearance the next day, according to video posted by TMZ. “I’d like to apologize to the Seminole Indians. Big shout-out to the Seminoles.”

Chappelle earned booed for a routine that was almost completely joke-less and that saw him actually stop midway to check his text messages, documented via a series of Tweets by CNN journalist Roland Martin, who happened to be in the audience.

The comedian then went on to explain this isn’t the first time he’s bombed onstage that badly, saying in essence did the same during the MTV Video Music Awards in 2004.

“I was kind of a pariah at the VMAs,” he quipped. “Nobody really wanted to be around me because I snapped on the other celebrities.”

A spokesperson the Seminole Indian Tribe released a statement that reads “the Tribe appreciates and accepts his apology and welcomes him back anytime.”
