Ted Danson, whose career was resurrected by his shady character on “Damages,” is heading for the other side of the law. He will replace Laurence Fishburne this fall as the star of “CSI.”

CBS said late Tuesday evening that Danson will join the show for its premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 21, playing the new CSI lab supervisor.

Fishburne left abruptly at the end of last season, though CBS indicated his departure was not a surprise. Fishburne had replaced long-standing star William Petersen two and a half seasons earlier.

“CSI” ratings have been slipping as it enters its 12th season, but it remains a popular program.

Danson, who made his TV reputation years ago in “Cheers,” will continue on HBO’s “Bored To Death.”

He has also been a semi-regular on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

CBS called Danson a major catch.

“From the moment we all started talking about the role, it was clear [Danson] couldn’t be more perfect,” said executive Producer Don McGill. “Intelligence, wit, warmth, depth of character and emotion, he brings it all. And now he’ll have to bring latex gloves, too.”
