On Sunday, July 3rd the first annual RVA Fireworks on the James was held. The event sponsored by Dominion and MeadWestvaco was held on Brown’s Island in downtown Richmond. The family friendly event was free to all and began at 7PM. Families were allowed to bring their coolers and picnic baskets to island and many did, finding a spot among the island to sit and eat. For those who chose not bring their picnic, venders were out selling favorites such as funnel cake, turkey legs, and lemonade. The fireworks were not set to begin until 9:30, but there were plenty for the guest to do in the mean time.

Various radio stations were on the island as well as a balloon maker and a caricature. Immediately before the firework show began entertainment was provided by, SPARC, the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra and Richmond Ballet’s Minds in Motions, three youth arts groups. The groups dressed in red, white, and blue t-shirts performed numbers from their summer shows as well patriotic number in celebration of the holiday.

The fireworks began at 9:30 and could be seen from both the island as well as the Lee Bridge. The fireworks were done by Grucci, a company that has done other big firework displays including the annual Washington D.C. firework display. The fireworks were set to a patriotic playlist and lasted for 30 minutes. We were there and were able to get some pictures. Check them out.
