This weekend America is set to celebrate on of the Nation’s biggest holidays the, the 4th of July. The 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, commemorates the day America gained independence from Great Britain . Typically 4th of July is one of the most traveled holidays, according to the AAA about 35 million people traveled the highways. However because of the recession and the fact that gas prices are still a little pricey many people will be looking to stay in the area. Lucky for you we’ve found four free activities that can be done right in the area.

1. Genworth Financial Celebrate Freedom Independence Day Concert– On Friday, July Genworth Financial will celebrate with the Heritage of America Band. There will be face painting, balloons, giveaways, food vendors and much more. There will also be an firework display. The event starts at 6:30 – dusk and will be located at Genworth Financial’sWorld, 6620 West Broad Street, between Dickens Road & Glenside Drive. 2. The Dogwood Dell 4th– Sunday July 4th the Dogwood Dell will offer music from Richmond Concert Band and other featured musicians and Fireworks. 3. The Chesterfield CountyFourth of July– On Monday, July 4th there will be a celebration at Chesterfield County Fairgrounds. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with the fireworks display beginning at dark. This event is a family friendly event. The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds are located at 10300 Courthouse Road, across from L.C. Bird High School. 4. A Cookout – One of the best ways to celebrate is by having a cookout with friends. Because 4th of July is a National Holiday many have the day off. Barbeque’s can be done at any time of the weekend and if it’s done potluck style can be very affordable . So get some friends together light up a grill and have a good time! Just be sure not to set off fireworks, it’s illegal in Virginia.
