April is National Autism Awareness Month

Pam and Perry Mines would like to bring Autism Awareness to the African American Community by sharing their story and very inspiring book entitled, God Chose Me.

Pam and Perry are the proud parents of 2 children.  Their daughter Michelle is 7 years old and is typically developed.  Their son JP, is 5 years old and has Autism.   Pam and Perry were proactive when they noticed their son JP had a slight developmental delay at the tender age of 1 years old.  After JP’s diagnosis, the Mines family has been incredibly diligent about accepting their son’s Autism while ensuring that Autism did not “run” their household.  They would like to encourage other families to act quickly if they notice something is not quite right with their child.  The longer a parent waits or is paralyzed by denial or shame, the more the child suffers and misses out on beneficial treatment.

Pam wrote the children’s book, God Chose Me, to help differently-abled children in various areas of development.  These areas include, fine motor skills, person identification, repetition, color identification, and sign-language for children who are non-verbal.  It is Pam’s hope that her book serves as a wonderful resource for children with special needs as well as a reminder to their parent’s, friends, therapist and others that they were “chosen” to be in that child’s life. Pam is an active member of the Autism Society of Central Virginia and she is Co-Chair of the Special Education Department on the PTA at JP’s Elementary School, Jacobs Road Elementary.

You can purchase Pam’s book and sign-up to join the Mines family at the 8th Annual Autism Society of Central Virginia 5K Walk/Run by visiting www.GodChoseMe.com.
