Animal authorities in San Francisco are calling for a pet sale ban that would include goldfish, guppies and tropical fish.

The Animal Control and Welfare Commission said the pet sale ban would help to crack down on puppy and kitten mills and would discourage “impulse buys” of animals that end up at shelters, the San Francisco Chronicle reported last Thursday.

Commission member Philip Gerrie said fish would be included because “most fish in aquariums are either mass bred … or taken from the wild.” He said taking the fish leads to “devastation of tropical fish from places like Southeast Asia.”

Commission President Sally Stephens, who opposes the ban, said the final decision will be left up to the Board of Supervisors.
