Today’s Favorite Book is “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker. This moving novel is a favorite to countless women all over the world. Award-winning director Steven Spielberg presented a film adapted from the novel in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey. “The Color Purple” won a cult following after its recent reintroduction to the public via a Broadway production, “The Color Purple—The Musical About Love,” in 2005; singer Fantasia Barrino joined the cast in 2007, playing the role of Celie, the novel’s female protagonist. Although critics predicted a flop, the production mesmerized audiences, and helped introduce theater to a new generation of “Color Purple” lovers.

In the novel, Celie’s pain, which stems from the traumatic loss of her sister and an abusive marriage, is tempered by a reunion with her children, whom she had not seen since their births, and a special friendship with her husband’s girlfriend, Shug Avery. Author Alice Walker has won the respect of millions since the debut of this terrific read, which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award. This novel disguises itself as a tragic story at times, but is really a beautiful proclamation of strength, love and womanhood.
