The San Francisco 49ers, winners of 5 Super Bowls, and once one of the NFL elite teams, had seen enough.  Highly respected for his play on the field, Hall of Fame LB Mike Singletary could not transfer that pedigree to the team he coached.  Thus, after two seasons, the 49ers fired Singletary following last night’s loss to the St. Louis Rams. He was reportedly asked to resign but refused.  Despite an 0-5 start this season, San Francisco was still in contention to win the division and a playoff berth until last night’s loss.  A sideline meltdown with QB Troy Smith while TV cameras were rolling didn’t help matters.  Singletary finished with an 18-22 record.
